Garage Club makes it's mark at the York US30 reunion:

Garage Club members both participated in and hosted the 6th annual York US30 Reunion. It all started on Thursday, July 12th when I hauled my 56 Gasser to the York Fair Grounds and put it in the Toyota Exp. Center. All I can say is WOW. I had million $$$ cars & legendary drivers all around me. I felt so insignificant but that didn’t last long. Most thought my car was cool. In the evening, Beaver Bob & Flash Back Bill stopped by. They introduced me to many of the 60’s Super Stock / Gasser drivers. Hey, they’re normal people, just like you & me. It was really cool when 73 year old Hemi Super Stock driver Ken Montgomery told how he reads Flash Back Bill’s flag man starts. Apparently, Ken watches for Bill’s wrist to change angle before he drops the flag. He leaves on the wrist twitch.

Friday, Chris Ives, Jeff Doud, Denny & Melissa Aungst stopped by to check out the show and to go cruising. We found where the street racing takes place in York. There was some Heavy Hitters in the parking lot of the West York Mall along Rt 30. The smell of race fuel was in the air but the off and on appearance of the Fuzz kept the action low. I hear it’s gets hot there around 2AM.

While many club members headed off to Beaver for the open test and tune on Saturday, I found myself held over at the York show till they released our cars at 9PM. There was a car show of about 300 street cars outside the doors of the Toyota building. Everyone stayed to see the Gassers, Stocker, and Super Stockers drive out of the building. Driving my un-corked Big Block Gasser through the crowd to my hauler was a feeling I can’t describe. Later that night while driving my flat bed from York to Beaver, I couldn’t help but feel like I was back in the 60’s living the dream. Leaving the big one at York, driving all night to get to the next big race. I thought to myself, how many times had my old 56 made trips like this back in the day. When I got to Beaver, good people, a camp fire, sausage and a few beers were waiting for me.

The next day, fellow club member and York Show host Beaver Bob McCardle proved why his track is now THE Nostalgia Drag Strip of the country. Man, does he put on a show and he does everything too. He promotes, announces, problem solves, even parks cars. Bob’s front man, Flash Back Bill did most of the announcing that day + perfectly replicated flag man starts, just like in the 50’s and early 60’s. OH, ya, and check out Bill’s pit ride, a 28 Ford rat rod roaster.

Through out the day, the track was transformed back to 1969. Famous people were everywhere. Miss Hurst, Linda Vaughn even commented about meeting Beaver Bob back in the early 60’s. She claimed she was just in a training bra back then. Bob commented that "she had trained them very well". A few Club member competed on the track. Bob Bowman was running 9.0s with his hard leaving Vega Wagon. Chris Ives was running his beautiful 69 Camaro with 454. Butch Markel was running his nasty 69 Road Runner. Leonard Long had his 8 sec, 02 Cobra Mustang there + Andy Jensen was making passes in the Turbo Vette. He was the fasting thing there, even faster then the Nitro Funny cars. YES, the Garage Club left their mark at the York US30 Reunion ! Wow, what a weekend!
