Chris Ives' "Diary of an American Street Racer" script begins to show some life:

Chris Ives, our club's founder, wrote a screen play while stationed in Iraq. Chris was trying to sell the script to have an actual Hollywood film made from his own work. After a couple years of having no luck in getting a bite, we decided to make small "YouTube" video segments to try to sell the script to a production company while having a bit of fun with it ourselves in the meantime.

After several planning meetings, we started our filming sessions. below on this page, you can see the first two sessions with the actual video and some behind the scenes pics. Check them out and see if you may want to participate at one of our future filming sessions.

Chris Ives' movie now has it's first minutes of actual footage in the can. We decided to take several selected scenes from the movie script and create a "YouTube" trailer. Danny's Boulevard Drive In was the setting for one scene in the film. This scene, set in 1969, has "Ace" in a legendary Gasser that makes a pass through the local hang-out looking for a race. There also is a police car patrolling the area played by the actual Chief of Police from Ashland. The Ashland police and Fire police really helped us out by shutting down rt. 61 on June 15th (Father's Day) for a few minutes to allow us to set up and shoot the shot.

A second scene was filmed after the session which happens later in the movie where the main characters steal a police car and race past on their way to the race track where they are late to compete. Sound interesting? Read the script by clicking on the title...

Our second shoot didn't go near as smoothly as the first shots. This shoot was scheduled to be held at Russell Automotive outside of Lykens on a long stretch of almost perfectly straight road in August 2008. Our plans included getting help from the local police and the local fire company to get the road shut down for the 5 minute shots. Well, we failed to get the police to be present even though they were aware of it. The fire company didn't come to the event this time. They just loaned us some flares, vests, and radios for traffic control. We were a little uncomfortable getting things rolling, but with the large turnout we had, the set up began. We had to hit the lighting just right as the sun went down. The first portion included a simulated drag race shot the the cars were to leave the scene as the '56 gasser rolled in. Wouldn't you know, that is exactly when the state police rolled in. After a bit of a discussion, the officers realized this was not an illegal street race.
.
After discussing what we planned to do, we told them we wanted them to stay on the scene to verify there was no reaal racing taking place. Heck the two gassers were even staged on Russell's lot for the major portion of the video. They asked how long we needed which we replied about two to three minutes. They obliged by blocking off the road for us to stage the launch scene. After which the police saw we were done and left the area. Wouldn't you know, one of the cameras, operated by Chris himself, wasn't turned on for the shot from behind the cars. Did we let it go? No way, we had to set it up and do it again on our own. I was a nervous wreck till it was done, but the shot made the film.

Thanks to everyone who showed up and hung out to make this happen. Thanks to The two state police officers who shall remain nameless and the Wiconisco Fire Co. for use of their equipment to shut down the highway for us to film. And a special thanks to Jeff, the owner of Russell's Automotive for opening the shop. Also thanks to Pete and Karen Tobash for getting some pics of behind the scenes pictured here.
Starring in this segment are Dave Lehr as "Ace" in his '56 Chevy Gasser, Bill Schoffstall as "Willys Bill" and his '40 Willys Gasser, Chal Schoffstall as "The Wiconisco Kid" (Willys Bill's pit man), Kevein Holland and his '66 Chevelle SS396 as "Drag Racer #1, Ken Horning and his '66 Fairlaine 390 as "Drag Racer #2", Melissa Aungst as "Race Starter #1", Crystal Jones as "Race Starter #2", Andy Bernodin as "The Police Chief", and our "betting youth", Alex Wray, Jason Webster, and Steven Palmer.

Participating in working positions at the event were Chris Ives, the script writer who was also doing the directing, Derek Griffiths helping behind the scenes footage and helping operate the cameras, Denny Aungst operating the primary cameras, Melissa Aungst helping with camera operations, and Mike Potts, Amy Reichert, and AJ Wolff handling the road control.

Extras and their rides included Chal Schoffstall's 63 1/2 Galaxie 500 lightweight, Rick, Gina, & Login Wetzel in their white '55 Chevy, Brian & Amy Zimmerman in their '58 Chevy Impala 348, Bill Schoffstall's '64 Falcon, Pete and Karen Tobash in their '70 Chevy Nova, John Murray in his '66 Chevelle convertible, Dan Palmer in his flames '65 Falcon, Red Florida in his green '56 Chevy, and extras as spectators Jeff, Crystal, Evan, & Nicholas Russell, Tim Klinger, Chris Wertz, Drew Wetzel, Terry Lenker, Andrew Weist, Pam Holland, Dean Shadle, and Kayla Jones.
