"Speed Zone"
(our annual December club activity)

Every December Jeff Doud usually organizes a club function to keep us from getting stir crazy when we can't get the cars out of the garages. The club rents a go-cart track where we work up a schedule to take turns and get to make laps against each other. Check out some of the sample pics below:

Dave Lehr scheduled a 2 hour session for the club to race the mini sprint cars on the slick track at the Carlisle Sports Emporium It was on Tuesday, Dec.12th from 8PM till 10PM.

You don't have to be a club member to join in the fun for this event.
We wanted 24 racers but wound up with 18. That worked out because they had 9 cars available and we could run 9 people for four, 30 minute sessions giving each person 1 hr total drive time. The 30 minutes were broken into 3 - 10 minute heats.

The annual "wrench" was thrown into the gears when the first car broke in the first heat of the second 30 minute session. Mike Potts was the "lucky" guy who broke the cart this year. I guess since John Shultz wasn't there, someone had to step in and break one. Mike's cart had the main drive belt snap. I tried to take it home as a souvenir, but they got it back from me.

Since we only had 8 cars the rest of the night, Jim Manganell was the first to give up his seat in a ten minute session so Mike could hop back in. (Thanks Jim!) The rest of the night, we had guys share the cars so only a couple guys missed a ten minute session.

The only other mishap was when Jim Manganell's Gas mask canister fell off on the track and it accidentally jammed under my cart, causing it to drive funny. (Yes, I said, "GAS MASK". Jim tends to bring odd racing gear each year. There is a picture on his page that shows him in a cart with a WW2 flying helmet and goggles two years ago.) By the time we realized what the part was, several members ran it over and flattened it. Sorry, Jim. It sure looked like a part from the carts, a serious part. Most of us wondered who lost what looked like a clutch housing and no one's cart stopped.

As you can see to the left, I took a small video camera with and shot some of the action to go along with a few pics I took. Also, I would like to thank Andy Jensen, who purchased two large pizzas which everyone had a slice or two. We would also like to thank Dave Lehr, who set the whole thing up and even got his Dad's 11 passenger van for Pine Grovers and some northerners. Everyone else met us there.
GC members (in bold print) and their guests who participated were:

Dave Lehr, Eric Lehr, Jeff Doud, Nash Doud, Bailey Doud, John Schaeffer, Jim Manganell, Andy Jensen, Bernie Vilcheck, Wayne Witmer, Dave Abrams, Devin Trexler, Kevin Holland, Chris Holland, Mike Potts, Bobby Winklebleck, and Denny Aungst.

Dev's girlfriend, Alex, came along and helped to watch our club cutie, Trinity Witmer. Melissa Aungst opted out of driving this time to get some papers graded for work in between taking some video footage for me.

I got a lot of comments about this pic. Even though it was a mistake, it's pretty cool.
