Garage Club's December meeting to be at a Chassis Dyno Shop in Harrisburg:
 |
Bob Zubrickie set up a cool meeting for the upcoming December Garage Club meeting on December 6th,
2007. He arranged a shop to host the meeting that includes a Chassis Dyno capable of up to 2000 wheel horsepower.
The shop is Don's Performance Corner off Derry Street in Harrisburg. (Bob would have liked to host the meeting,
but has not near enough parking at his place for the turnouts we have been getting.)
Newest updates are at the top, below the maps and directions to Don's Dyno shop. As you read down the page, you
can see how the meeting came to be, read about the contestants selection process, and view the competition itself
with the results and video... |

Updated 12-10-2007 - So what were the results???
First, I want to thank Bob Zubrickie, Ed Rist, and Andy Vasbinder for
setting up the food. It was all great! Thanks to Don and his crew (sorry, I don't have everyone's name) for allowing
us to enjoy our meeting at his facility. Thanks to Chas Pinkerton, Bob Zubrickie, Ed Rist, and Ken Horning for
dragging their wheels to the event. Thanks to Doug Garrison for filling any of the contestant's tanks who opted
for nitrous for free. And Thanks to Dave Lehr for help with the logo for the Garage Club's first trophy and chasing
down the Garage Club banner.
The attendance sheet had 57 names on it, but I KNOW we had closer to 75 people attending. The signup
sheet signatures will be posted on the January 2008 Newsletter.
Without any of these guys pulling their weight, we wouldn't have had possibly the coolest meeting yet. I'll
post the dyno sheets, low to high: |
|
First Chas Pinkerton. '76 Pontiac Pro Street Astre with a 383 small block. We believe Chas had
some traction problems, the car seemed to downshift regardless of what they tried, and they analyzed his secondary
fuel curve as dangerously lean. This brought them to shut down before a good hp reading could be acheived. Chas
was disappointed, but probably benefitted most from the information gained that could very well save his engine
from damage and a major increase in horsepower next spring.:

Next was Ken Horning's Rousch prepped 427 (stroked small block) AC Cobra Kit car. His car originally
dynoed a healthy 550 hp at the crank. The numbers were low for this pull, but after a lengthy discussion on the
car's history, we realized the carb had been replaced by the original owner with a smaller one to give better response
on the street and more hood clearance. It did cost him around 50 or so horsepower at the wheels, but mainly at
the top RPM range that is unuseable anywhere but at the track.:

|
Bob Zubrickie's Supercharged and intercooled Viper (who was hooked up first for the evening)
came in at second place. He was having a power loss issue that this helped him solve. His first pass was much higher
in horsepower than his second. The first run he purposely ran with a cool engine, then made the second pass after
warming it up to full operating temperature. He found out that he was getting "heat soaked" after the
blower causing a major power drop. Some work with the intake cooler is in order:

Two other sweet rides that Don keeps in his Dyno room. To the right is his personal set of wheels.
The hood didn't come off, but it was equipped with some serious horse power.
To the left is a Blown Woody from Florida that he is finishing up. This car was near perfect. |

We hope you enjoyed our little event as much as we did. Watch for a full day session coming this
spring. Come on down, utilize the Dyno, Check out some real Pro Mod and Pro Stock cars, or maybe give Don some
of your business. Don't forget to tell him we sent you. |

Update... Who got scheduled?:
On 11-02-2007, the Garage Club's regular November meeting, we had our selection for our 4 contestants. We decided
to have four drawings. One for each make, including, Ford, GM, Mopar, & "wildcard". We will split
up all entries into a hat and have a drawing for each spot. The "wild card" was for everything other
than the first three catagories, but no one qualified for that class. We had a second chance drawing for everyone
who didn't make the first three spots.
So, who won the drawings?
Here's what we got so far.
The Ford division had only only one entry, Ken Horning. What an entry that was... He drives a Roushe prepped 427
cubic inch Cobra. The sounds as good as it looks and should defend the blue oval guys pretty well.
The GM division had our most entries with many more people throwing names in at the last minute. Chas Pinkerton
came out of the bucket to defend the Bowtie Brigade. He'll be bringing his cool yellow Pro-street small block powered
Pontiac Astre. He'll probably even drive it to the session like he does to every race. I hope he finally boosts
the car with that bottle he has on display between the rear tires.
The Mopar division was won by Bob Zubrickie who passed his spot onto Ed Rist, another Viper owner who he felt would
be more fun to watch. Ed has a Viper that also has Nitrous and plans to use it for the run.
Karma was in play for the "wildcard" drawing. Bob Zubrickie was drawn again since we tossed his name
back in the pot after forfeiting the run to the other member. Bob will also be running a Viper. His Viper, however,
is a stout blown V10 and we don't mean broke. It has a superchager all tucked under the hood, intercooler and all.
This should be a cool competition. Doug Garrison even offered to fill all contestant's Nitrous tanks for free!
Contact him at (610) 781 5217. I think the competeters are close enough to make it a hard guess to win. I think
the side bets will be fun. Check out the cars to the left.
What's the plan for the 6th?
The regular meeting night is as usual, Thurday, December 6th. We will meet at Don's Performance Corner for some
eats, meats, and greets. (provided by Bob Zubrickie, Ed Rist, and Andrew Vasbinder!) Then we will hook up for three
to four Dyno runs (two dyno pulls per car) that the Garage Club is paying for. The official meeting to follow.
Try to be there early, I would like to see people showing up by 6:00.

How the event started:
On 10-10-2007 Dave Lehr, Mike Potts, myself, & Melissa met Bob at his garage for a quick tour of the home of
his Supercharged '98 Viper and the cool rock crawler we all saw at Jim Manganell's meeting. After chatting for
a while and seeing the high points of his shop, we headed over to Don's Performance Corner to meet the owner and
check the place out.
As we rolled in to the parking area behind the shop, there were several imports parked with the drivers hanging
out. They immediately swarmed Bob's Viper to check it out till we headed in the shop. (It gave us a feeling of
being at a secret performance import meeting point like was portayed in the "Fast & Furious" movie.)
Once inside the shop we met the owner and were given a tour of the facility. What a place! There were some very
fast cars parked inside the Dyno area and some serious engines on stands around the shop, dyno area, and 'clean
room'.
So, what are we planning?
Here's what we got so far. The regular meeting night is as usual, Thurday, December 6th. We will meet at Don's
Performance Corner for some eats, meats, and greets. (provided by Bob Zubrickie, Ed Rist, and Andrew Vasbinder!)
Then we will hook up for three to four Dyno runs (two dyno pulls per car) that the Garage Club is paying for. The
official meeting to follow.
How are we deciding who gets the free runs?
We came up with 2 suggestions:
- The leading method is to have four drawings. One for each make, including, Ford, GM, Mopar,
& "wildcard". Anyone who would like to try it should sign up on the form below or at the November
meeting. We will split up all entries into a hat and have a drawing for each spot. The "wild card"is
for everything other than the first three catagories. If no one qualifies for that class, it will be a second chance
drawing for everyone who doesn't make the first three.
- The second method was to have everyone who wants to do it volunteer as suggested above, but
then everybody will VOTE on which four they want to see.
If you win a spot you must guarantee that you will be there. We will draw a backup that should
be ready if the first has an emergency or something happens so we have four ready for the meeting. We just want
to cover ourselves for the dyno pulls.
Either way, we WILL pick the people by the November meeting, so get signed up on the form below, or somehow let
us know if you can't make the November meeting to reserve a chance at it.
Why the Free runs?
Since the meeting is on Thursday evening, we only have a limited time. We could only fit four in reasonably. This
will make a cool meeting and give everyone a taste so we can have a Garage Club "Dyno Day" event where
we could open it up to anyone. They normally charge 75 dollars for a car to make 4 pulls on the Dyno, but would
probably give us a deal for a whole day thing...
Want to try it out on your own?
Sometimes they run specials and one is coming up. On November 3rd, Don's Performance Corner is having a Dyno Day
and are charging 45 dollars per car for 3 pulls on the Dyno. This all includes horsepower, torque, and exhaust
gas graphing with printouts.
