My reason for purchasing a complete used engine:

Here is a short list of some of the major parts and the prices I was given for rebuilding my engine:

Each cylinder cost
$517 ($1034). The cylinder head cost $536. The crankshaft cost $904. Now, without gaskets, pistons, rings, or end bearings, one powervalve that is broken, intake boots that are ripped, top case half that is cracked, spark plugs, and whatever else that may crop up, I still would have well over 2600 dollars (I am estimating way over $3000) in fixing up my engine. I plan on fixing it by scrounging used parts off Ebay and that will be addressed at a later point. I have already made a few good purchases, but we are focussing on this engine on this page.

I was browsing for parts on Ebay after a very enlightening trip to Zechman's. (See the box above) Wouldn't you know, I came accross this picture with a complete engine for sale out of a demolished 1985 RZ. I put a major bid on to get it. The total price came to $1050 + shipping and insurance. (which were a bit pricey, that is for sure, but still well under my top bid price.) I found out later that the '85 models had a different set of plugs on the wiring harness for the magneto, but I had the '84 setup available.
I was told this engine had only 5,600 miles on it and was stock bore. I was a bit skeptical, but after examination upon receiving the engine made me beleive the claim. A bore scope revealed the top of the piston showed stock bore. The cylinders had the original semi-gloss finish and wasn't even wore from the clutch cable like all higher mileage RZs. The rest of the engine was extremely clean and the nuts weren't scarred as if they were ever removed. I really believe it was an honest ad for a low mileage piece.

Below are the pictures of the bike. I got these from the owner through our conversations. It is really wrecked. He said he wasn't riding it when it was put down. I hope he got to kick his buddy's ass (or whoever wrecked it) after they got better.

Juan also emailed me some pics of the new bike that the guy who wrecked his bike paid for. This one is beautiful. He actually got it in the crate, brand new! There is now 315 miles on the thing, He also came across and NOS solo seat kit. Of course he didn't mention what this all cost him. Hopefully mine comes out even half as nice as this one.
