Club Picnic held at Knoebel's Grove, September 14th, 2008:
The day started out with some club members taking a ride to Hegins for the benefit car show that was set up by Shane Ressler. The turnout was only 12 cars. Some of them were club members who showed to sign in and left early to get to the picnic. This also prompted the club to take collections at the club picnic and forwarded $106.42 back to Shane to be added to the benefit's talley.

On a side note, next year, the club will help, sponsor, organize, and advertise the event. That will hopefully help raise the car count and get much more participation.

  • First, we will help pick an open date so it doesn't interfere with the club picnic, scheduled again for next year.
  • Next, we will help pass flyers out at the events prior to the benefit car show. This will also include email reminders and coverage on the site and message board.
  • Finally, we will try to push for member participation, not only to bring your car, but to help out at the event when needed as well.

The club has been itching to hold a car show, now is our chance to try to do it right. Let's hear what your suggestions are and how we can make a show people would really want to come to?

Bill Schoffstall, Red Florida, and Melissa and I left the Hegins car show early to head for Knoebels Grove. We needed to get there and make sure everything was in order and we could direct members to the pavilion. It was a beautiful day for a cruise to the park for a picnic! The weather turned out perfect.
Even though we tried to get there an hour before the park even opened, there was quite a crowd there already. We had nothing to worry about however. Bob Zubrickie was the first to arrive and took it upon himself to finalize our arrangements for special parking right at the pavilion. Isn't it great to have poeple in the club who are involved and will be leaders? Through out the day, the roped off section of ourt parking became a car show. Almost everyone entering or leaving made a trip around or through the roped off area to check out our rides! At the end of the day when Mike Potts and myself went to the office to settle our account, the ladies commented on how nice the cars were out there.

The pavilion was located under the trees right alongside the creek in the back. It was the perfect spot! Not only wass the temperature kept moderate by the breeze, trees, and water, we were only a stone's throw from the cars and could keep a close eye on them. The food was served at 3:00 and our drinks were put on at 2:30. There was another group that was scheduled just before us to eat and there was a little confusion with our members eating from their food and their members drinking our beverages, but it gort sorted out. I stood in the food line to pull our people out till we got served and Jill Zerby and Michele Whitcomb stood gaurd over the drink machine. Boy, they could send someone packing, let me tell you!

The food turned out to be great. There was actually a good portion available and no one went hungry. The chicken tasted good and the burgers and dogs were grilled fresh right there. There was a crew serving us and they even had a band play music. (Now the band could have been skipped by popular opinion as the music selections weren't to our taste and we will note that for the future.) There was a table designated to just the deserts and I stood gaurd over that. Somebody had to taste everything to make sure it was safe, right?

The tickets went over very well with the families and kids. What a good idea to keep kids from getting bored at a club function! I spent most of my day in the pavilion helping get people their tickets as well as just hanging out and talking. I got to really meet newer members who I wasn't familiar with and caught up with some older freinds I haven't talked to in a while. I think Melissa and I finally ventured to the park just after 5:00.

What a day! There were around 150 members that came to the event. (I am sure not all signed the book, but almost all of them are there) We have heard nothing but good comments and hopeful questions about next year. Let me assure you, we arranged the same weekend with the same pavilion and parking arrangements. The meal will be selected again as we did this year by popular vote, but everything should happen just as this year.

Special note needs to be made of the members who spent the time to arrange such a successful event. Alex Trexler was our prime member in this event, who got the ball rolling and was a great help with setting up the event even with her impending wedding in the month before the picnic. Mike Potts got all the checks where they needed to be on time. Melissa Aungst picked up in the final portion of the arrangement process when it came to a few questions I had, special arrangements I hoped to make for parking, and phoning in the menu choice. Bob Zubrickie got our parking finalized that day and forwarded me tons of pics. Finally, we want to thank everyone who brought a coverred dish for dessert.

There are too many names to list who came to the event, but enjoy the pics below and let's make it even bigger for next year.
