Hegins Park “Children’s Miracle Network” Benefit Car Show survives the weather forecast:

Well all I can say is, Great Job!” Mike and April Klinger headed up a crack team of planners all year to bring this event together. There were some bumps in the road right up until the day of the show, but everything was handled and handled well I might add. On the day of the show, some venders never showed, but Chas Pinkerton and some other committee members took the initiative to get supplies and a grill to cover the needed food for the show participants.

The weather was cold, really cold, and we were competing with the “Good Guys” show at Pocono. The rain was slated to start between two and four o’clock in the afternoon. (It actually hit at 3:00 during the awards.) Even with the dismal forecast, we still had 178 cars line the Hegins Park field. The “Garage Club” class saw 55 cars. This is what I really hoped to see, the club showing it’s true colors by participating. This made a cool impression to the rest of the show. We even received compliments that our members weren’t taking trophies away from the other show cars, a sticking point for other club’s car shows held during the year. To judge the Garage Club class we had the donation boxes at each car and the top three got awards. We raised over 500 dollars in these boxes for the Children’s Miracle Network.

We would like to thank Bruce Larson, Ken Kull, and “Bee on Video” for making our event special. It was an honor to have these truly historic cars and their very friendly and gracious owners participate in our fund raising event. These were true heros to most of us throughout their lives and still are. Their cars were a big hit at the show. Bruce even came up at the awards ceremony to say a few words. He even complimented our club and the organization of the show. Thanks Bruce!

We awarded Bruce and Ken with some custom engraved plaques to thank them for helping make our show one to remember. All the awards can be viewed by clicking the printable version below or at the bottom of the page next to the photo album of all the pics we took at the event.

We did our best to make sure that as many people as possible were able to walk away with a trophy of some sort. Our show was set up to only allow each person to be awarded one trophy. In theory that was a great idea. In reality, there were a couple small classes that skewed our best laid plans. The special awards were also designed to add to the amount of awards to be given to participants, but in some cases allowed a person to score multiple awards. We hope to adjust the rules and classes for a better distribution of awards for the show next year.

Club member, Mark Brown, also had a pulled pork sandwich stand that was busy all day. CJ and Laura Young had a stand that sold some nice hand crafted jewelry and Longaberger baskets. We had a photographer come in to take pictures of the cars and sell them products with their cars on it. (I’ll try to find out if he has a website that maybe you can order something if you want to.)

Bob Zubrickie really came through for us with some absolutely cool trophies. Dave Lehr’s special awards were a hit as well on display at the stage. Butch Markel and Ron Stahl sold an amazing amount of 50/50 tickets. Amy Reichert, Mike Potts, and Melissa Aungst worked our sign up table, while Craig Morgan, Matt Murphy, and Kyle Murphy ran the forms back and forth.  Molly Pinkerton did a great job organizing and overseeing our door prize and chinese auction booths at the show. Thanks to Chuck Herrold for a good job with he DJ service and sound system that he donated for free. Dave Lehr also used this system to our advantage by keeping busy interacting with the show participants and providing announcements throughout the day. Kevin Hoffman’s very well made signs kept everyone informed with where they were supposed to be and I only had to do some minor directing at the entrance to the event. The sign up booth had lots of help and kept things moving. The longest line of the day was actually pictured above.

I guess the question of the day is, “How much did the club raise for the Children’s Miracle Network?” It came out to 3,067 dollars and some odd cents after all of the costs were covered.

This was a very good profit for our first show and we hope to make even more next year. The check was hand delivered to Hershey a couple of weeks later where they gave us a tour of the facility. How did we rate compared to other car club show donations?  You can read about it by clicking here for our page about the Children’s Miracle Network Tour.

Once again, “Thanks to all of our show sponsors. Your help allows us to donate 100% of the proceeds earned through the car show to benefit the Children’s Miracle Network at Hershey.”

Dave was smart with the special awards he designed. The period correct hot rod trophies will need some adjustments, but they were very impressed with the vintage trophies Dave created to award these special cars. He also was right in setting up the “Baddest Sounding Engine” award. It allowed everyone to follow a team of judges and put their two cents in on which sounded the best when they were fired up. This was VERY popular and we need to do this again next year. Dave’s team had a large crowd and really made the participants feel special who signed up to be judged. Not only that, it kept everyone occupied while we scored the judging and keeping things from slowing down.

We finished scoring as the contest wound down and then presented the list to Dave to award the trophies. Just like that it started raining. Dave tried to make a show of it like we planned, but some people just wanted to rush him and get out of the rain. It made for a tense moment when one actually approached the stage and told Dave to get things moving. Dave did keep his cool, apologized, and sent the trophies out to their new owners. We had hoped to talk up our winners and actually list what they drove, but the rain took that away from us. Hopefully next year.

You can read all of it in the results below next to the photo album. (Special thanks to Bob Zubrickie for getting the photos from the event. I was stuck working traffic most of the day and didn’t get a chance.)

There were only a couple of suggestions that we will address. One was a suggestion for a Shelby only class, and the other was for more signs at the exit of 81 and along the route to the park. We will have these made for next year. There were more compliments than we can post. We appreciate that everyone enjoyed the event and hope to see them and all of their friends next year.

Enjoy all of our pictures in the photo gallery below. Keep in mind, there are three pages of them and you can zoom in by clicking any photo.
