I forget what her name is, but she sure was
a cute little blondie!"

Second attempt at 100 MPH Club!

This is the second time that my car has ever been at Beaver Springs
Dragway to become a member of it's 100 MPH club. I did a bit of work over the winter
to install a Nitrous Oxide plate. I have fabricated everything to keep the
initial appearance to be stock. In the process I also rebuilt the carburetor and
found an improperly installed vaccuum advance to the distributor.
The entire process cost me a bottle of Captain Morgan spiced rum
(That was what Tom Larnard wanted for the used Nitrous solenoid! ha-ha) and 10 bucks
(That was what Mark Brown wanted for the tank bracket.) Everything else was
donated to me by various members of the garage club.
I would like to thank Wayne Witmer (for the braided line and throttle
switches as well as the running to get the tank filled), Scott Aungst (for the tank),
Dave Lehr (for some ideas and support), and Scott Hasenauer (for the Quadrajet plate
with lies and fuel solenoid).

So, How did the day go?
(Besides the vapor lock problem in Sunbury)
 |
First, I decided to take a time shot (practice race) immediately upon
arrival without any tuning changes to give me a base to work with. (P.S. absolutely
no Nitrous used here, but very good reaction time!) It was also about 95 degrees
out so the times are a little down from normal.
As you can see by the Results to the left, the car runs almost exactly on the factory
times and speeds. |
The only improvements made to this car were:
- 2 1/2" tailpipes were installed instead of the 2"
- Clutch fan replaced the original 4 blade fan.
- removed air cleaner
- adjusted the timing from 10 degrees to 8 degrees advanced.
Comments (Results #2):
| Here we turned on the Nitrous for the first time ever. Boy! What a
difference! Very bad wheel spin in first and second, though, causing severe wheelhop.
I'll have to do something about that for next time. Any way, goal achieved! Now lets
see if I can get 13's and win at least one round! |

Comments (Results #3):
Slipped on the reaction time, giving myself a red light.
My speed and E.T. have also improved slightly. The thing I am noticing is that my
first two readings are about the same or slower off the line. I gotta quit using
Nitrous in the first two gears till I get traction. There was also a slight hesitation
which we diagnosed to be a leak at the Nitrous solenoid.
Comments (Results #4):
We tried to lower the tire pressure but my 60 foot
times are going steadily down. The speed is still up at the bottom end, however.
It sure feels great to have an engine that pulls all the way down now.
First round elimination!
What happened? (Results #5):
| I dialed in a 14.00 to be sure I don't break out thinking it would
get cooler. Wrong! At least the other car broke out and let me advance to the semi
finals. Good reaction time AND got my 60 & 330 foot times back down a bit by
pumping the tires back up and using the button very sparingly in first and second. |
|
Semi-Finals!
What happened? (Results #6):
 |
Left the dial as it was, thinking again I would get
closer. I was definitely on the road to it. I beat the one armed guy (Last two years
was the track champion) off the tree, but that was it! My times were going down and
were looking to be my best of the night.
Third gear - started missing! Darn, the Nitrous tank had a pretty heavy leak at the
solenoid earlier that day and ran out about here. |
This floods the car with fuel. I had to finish the
race without it. I didn't even have a chance then. Oh well, new goal! Now I gotta
get into the 13's!
Until next time. See ya at the track! (Next
Time Here) |
